Your child’s first school is a big decision, and the early years shape how they feel about learning. Here’s what to know before you apply.
Typical entry ages under CBC
Under Kenya’s Competency-Based Curriculum, children usually start pre-primary at around 4 years for PP1 and 5 years for PP2, then Grade 1 at around 6. Schools may set their own cut-off dates, so always ask what age your child must be by the start of the term.
Documents to prepare
Most schools ask for:
Birth certificate (copy) Passport photos of the child Immunisation card or clinic card Parent or guardian ID copies Previous school report or transfer letter, if changing schools Completed application form and registration fee
Requirements vary, so confirm the list when you enquire.
What to look for in a good early-years school
- Warm, trained teachers who know the children by name
- Safe, clean spaces with secure gates, clean toilets and safe play areas
- Play-based learning, not only writing and drilling
- Small groups so each child gets attention
- Clear communication with parents about progress and fees
Questions to ask on your visit
- What is the teacher-to-pupil ratio in PP1 and PP2?
- What does a typical day look like?
- How do you support children who are shy or slow to settle?
- What is included in the fees, and what is extra?
- What are the transport and meal options?
- How and when will I get progress reports?
Timing matters
Popular schools fill their early-years classes first. Start enquiring at least one term before the start date, and visit more than one school so you can compare.
Look for early-years places near you: browse schools with open places on EnrollQ or search by county, such as Kiambu. For a wider view of what to compare, read our January 2027 school guide.
